Red Flowered Buckwheat

Red Buckwheat is a rare native perennial herb that grows up to one and a half feet tall and three feet wide.  It is a mat-forming plant producing tall, stout flower clusters of white, pink or red flowers.  The flowers are ball-like clusters are white and then turn red in late summer.  Blooms spring through fall. The leaves can grow up to four inches long at the base of the plant - the top is dark green and the underside is very pale.  Although it spreads, it doesn't spread fast and retains a petite form. It is endemic to three of the northern Channel Islands (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz).  It is useful in rock gardens, spilling over a wall, or in the understory of larger plants.
