Common name: Western Redbud

A California native medium tree that can reach up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide.  Purple flowers bloom in the spring before the leaves grow back.  Western Redbud's prefer hot summers and cold winters, it does not like coastal areas.  It is deciduous in the winter.  It is best to be pruned after or during flowering.  If you need to coppice the tree it should be done in the late fall or winter so new shoots will appear in wither to early spring.  The Some stems and trunks should be pruned if they grow large in diameter and length, because they will decrease the vifor of the tree.  New stem growth should be encouraged, if it is not the plant might become compromised and die.

Plant with:  Bush Anemone (Carpenteria californica), Silktassel Bush (Garrya elliptica), Deer Grass (Muhlenberia rigens), Mock Orange (Philadelphus lewisii), Oaks (Quercus species), Elderberry (Sambuccus nigra), Sages (Salvia species), Ceanothus species

- Water once a month after the first year
