Arctostaphylos edmundsii 'Bert Johnson'
Bert Johnson Little Sur Manzanita
A prostrating evergreen shrub with light green leaves that arches up to one foot high in middle and grows to six feet wide. The light pink flowers bloom in the spring. This is the fastest growing ground cover manzanita.
It is best to prune in the time when they are flowering to early summer. Each flower cluster terminates the growth of a shoot causing an irregular twiggy branching habit. It is not recommended to prune manzanitas during cool, wet winter months, this encourages fungal pathogens to spread. You can edge in late spring or early summer.
- Plant in part shade inland to full sun
- Avoid planting in areas of hot summer afternoon sun
- Water one to two times a month after the first year
- Great companion plant under evergreen oaks
- Well drained soils with normal winter rains and low amounts of supplemental water during summer
- Attracts birds, bees, and hummingbirds
- Moderately deer resistant
- California Native
