Pacific Sunset Flannel Bush

The flannel bush is a hybrid between F. californica ssp. decumbens and 'Californica Glory'.   This fast growing bush grows up to twenty tall and twenty feet wide.  The leaves have a leathery and fuzzy texture reminiscent of flannel, and the yellow and orange flowers are large and showy.  It has large orange-yellow cup-shaped flowers for a long period in spring.  These plants have shallow roots that may be blown over by wind.  This plant produces a pollen that can produce an allergic reaction.

You can prune this plant as needed.  You shouldn’t cut into old wood, prune hard, or make large pruning cuts.  The foliage and young stems have brown hairs that can be irritating and might cause a rash.

Plant in full sun

- Best in lighter soils with moisture nearby.  Their favorite spots are sandy washes with moisture down 8 ft or so below grade level.  In heavy soils any extra rainfall or one summer watering will kill the bush after it three years.

- Best if not watered once established

- Drought tolerant

- Attracts bees, birds, and butterflies

- Hardy up to 20 degrees

- Native to California
