Austin Griffiths Manzanita

A hybrid between Arctostaphylos densiflora 'Sentinel' and Arctostaphylos 'Dr. Hurd'.  This shrub or small tree can reach up to twelve feet high and wide.  The trunk and bark is red.  Pink flowers bloom in the winter through spring.  It is one of the earliest blooming manzanitas with stunning pink flower clusters.  

It is best to prune in the time when they are flowering to early summer.  Each flower cluster terminates the growth of a shoot causing an irregular twiggy branching habit.  It is not recommended to prune manzanitas during cool, wet winter months, this encourages fungal pathogens to spread.  You can edge in late spring or early summer.

- Full sun to part sun

- Prefers sandy soil but will do great in clay as long as it does not sit in water

- Attracts birds, bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies

- Native to California
