it is best to prune before new growth in the late fall and winter. If your plant is established you can cut the plant back hard to stubs no shorter than 8” long. You can also cut back half of the stems hard and lightly head back others. If the plant is cut back too hard it might not resprout. If you don’t cut the plant back it might look rangy after one to two years.
