Salvia uliginosa
Blue Spike Sage
A South American native that naturally grows in swamps and marshes, Bog Sage is an easy-to-grow, spreading perennial that’s perfect for adding interest to areas with poorly-draining soils. In wet to consistently moist soil, it will form large colonies of tall, erect stems covered in narrow, lanceolate leaves that grow 4 to 6 feet tall. Blooms once in spring and again in fall with numerous airy clusters of sky blue flowers that are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Can also be grown in ordinary garden soil where it will have a smaller spread of 3 to 5 feet. Grow in full sun to part shade inland. Cut back to the ground in winter for foliage rejuvenation and better flowering. Clumps of rhizomes can be dug up and split in winter to control spread.
