Louis Edmonds Manzanita

An evergreen shrub that grows moderately up to ten feet tall and wide.  It has gray foliage with pink flowers that bloom in late spring.  These shrubs do well when planted under Oak Trees.

It is best to prune in the time when they are flowering to early summer.  Each flower cluster terminates the growth of a shoot causing an irregular twiggy branching habit.  It is not recommended to prune manzanitas during cool, wet winter months, this encourages fungal pathogens to spread.  You can edge in late spring or early summer.

- Plant in full sun or partial shade

- Clay, loam, or sand texture dirt and requires good drainage.  Does well in heavy clay

- Water one or two times a month after the first year

- Great companion plant under evergreen oaks

- Drought tolerant- only winter water after first year

- Attracts butterflies, birds, bees, and hummingbirds

- Vulnerable to disease problems when summer irrigation produces moist soil and leaf litter conditions that enable active fungi and bacteria growth.
