Organic Ali Baba Watermelon
The light color makes the watermelon resistant to sun burning them. These melons grow up to 30 pounds and are large, vigorous and give heavy yields of oblong fruit which do well in many conditions. They are very sweet and luscious; and the texture is very crisp. This is a favorite of Dr. Amy Goldman and featured in her book “Melons for the Passionate Grower”. Ali Baba has received much acclaim online “as the best tasting watermelon,” and it will forever win a spot in any melon lover’s heart.
- Plant in full sun
- Plant spacing: 12-18"
- Sandy or light textured soils that warm easily in the spring are desirable. Melons are heavy feeders. Give 80-120 lbs of N per acre. Calcium deficiency can lead to blossom end rot, especially when adequate moisture is not available. Use dolomitic limestone.
- Ripeness is determined by four methods: when the tendril nearest the fruit is dried and brown; when the ground spot has turned from white to yellow; when the blossom end of fruit becomes soft; and the ubiquitous “thump test”— fruit should sound hollow.
- Grown in Los Angeles without pesticides
