A pine native to California and related to the Ponderosa pines. A fast growing evergreen tree that grows up to 180 tall and forty feet wide. With medium green leaves and brown flowers that bloom in spring. This plant produces a pollen that can produce an allergic reaction.
Plant with: Trees: White Fir (Abies concolor), Maple (Acer glabrum or macrophyllum), Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), Cherry (Prunus sp.), Oak (Quercus sp.), and Bay Laurel (Umbellularia californica)
Shrubs: Manzanita (Arctostaphylos sp.), Ceanothus sp., Dogwood (Cornus sp.), Flannelbush (Fremontodendron sp.), Currant/Gooseberry (Ribes sp.), Sage (Salvia sp.), and Huckleberry (Vaccinium sp.)

- Best in rich forest soils, tolerates serpentine soil
